The Icelandic Forestry
Association is a non-governmental organisation,
founded in 1930 and is the most powerful movement
for nature conservation in Iceland. It is in an
alliance of 53 nation-wide societies with
approximately 7000 members. Their main objectives
are to promote tree-planting and forestry; to work
for conservation of vegetation and soil and to
cooperate closely with other organisations in their
region, which are working for the same interests.
The largest and most ambitious reforestation project
was launched in 1990 on the occasion of the 60th
anniversary of The Icelandic Forestry Association.
The associations' members joined in co-operation
with many other benefactors in planting trees. Since
then over 8 million trees have been planted in over
90 areas around the island dedicated to land
Reclamation Forests.
Their main objectives are to promote tree planting,
forestry and nature conservation. They co-operate
closely with other organisations as well as with the
local communities in working towards the same
objective.
Administrative work in the societies is carried out
by volunteers. Additionally much of the planting and
other tasks are managed in the same way.
